BACK-UP"A term given to a second overcurrent protection device "upstream" to a fault or overload which will interrupt the overcurrent flow if a primary "downstream" device fails to do so. The response characteristics of the two protection devices should be chosen such that the two trip response times "cascade" for any given overcurrent value, with the device closest to the fault or overload (the primary or downstream device) responding first." |
